The potential benefits of temporary skilled migration are being squandered in Australia. Because they are politically undesirable, policymakers frequently limit visa sponsorship to a small number of low-skill, low-wage occupations. Governments should instead focus on how to enhance the system in order to attract global talent, increase budgets, and eliminate exploitation. When it comes to temporary skilled migration, Australia has the worst of both worlds. It should restructure the programme to make it easier to sponsor the high-skilled migrants that Australia desperately requires while also ensuring that public support for migration is not eroded.
